Comparison of two sampling techniques for quantitation of oral yeast levels.

چکیده
Quantitative culture techniques that estimate the magnitude of oral reservoirs of bacteria or fungi have utilized methods that enumerate colony forming units (CFU) per milliliter of saliva or rinse solution. 1-~ This technique requires the subject population’s cooperation in rinsing and/or expectorating, so it generally is not successful with children younger than 5 years old. A technique for young children that accurately measures the relative magnitude of oral reservoirs of m u tans streptococci employs a tongue blade saturated with the patient’s saliva and pressed onto a specific area of a selective agar medium, s-7 The number of CFUs of mutans streptococci that grow on the selective medium accurately quantifies the relative magnitude of the oral reservoir of these organisms. This approach helps to quantify oral mutans streptococci reservoirs in young children, but we question its use for quantifying oral yeast populations. Yeasts form larger colonies than mutans streptococci and the greater potential for confluent growth may cause inaccurate counts. The purpose of this report was to compare a modified "tongue blade" technique for quantifying oral yeast reservoirs with one using rinsing/expectorating.

Comparison of C - reactive protein Levels in Chronic Periodontitis Patients with Normal Subjects
Background: Chronic periodontitis causes systemic inflammation and increases C-reactive protein (CRP). CRP has been implicated as a possible mediator of associating periodontitis and several systemic diseases. The aim of the present study was to investigate systemic levels of CRP in patients with chronic periodontitis in comparison to periodontally healthy individuals. Materials and methods:...
متن کاملRecent Advances in Microextraction Methods for Sampling and Analysis of Volatile Organic Compounds in Air: A Review
Human exposures to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are associated with a wide range of health problems. Due to these adverse effects of VOCs on the human health, determination of trace levels of VOCs is very important for accurate assessment of indoor and outdoor exposure. Solid phase microextraction (SPME), needle trap device (NTD) and hollow fiber- liquid phase microextraction (HF-LPME) are...

Introduction: Although proximal dental caries are very common, clinical examinations cannot detect them all. Panoramic radiography has been widely used in dentistry for both diagnosis and screening. This study aimed to investigate and compare the efficacy of two digital panoramic radiography techniques in the diagnosis of proximal caries. Methods: A total number of 60 patients referred to a den...
